Interstate 84 is the main east-west freeway across the Hudson Valley, connecting Scranton, PA with Hartford, CT and the Massachusetts Turnpike. The road was originally proposed as part of the Thruway before being built as I-84, forcing the renumbering of NY 84, which was in the same area (NY 84 became part of NY 284 and NY 211). I-84 was transferred to the Thruway in the 90s, and later transferred back to NYSDOT around 2010 in return for removing tolls from I-190 in downtown Buffalo. In 2019, I-84 was converted to mileage-based exit numbers.
